Randy's birthday

Randy would be 39 today. My birthday memory of Randy is "Randy wrap." Every year I got a candy bar wrapped tightly in a brown bag. And so we called it "Randy wrap." Happy birthday Randy.

wood pen

I have a deck in my back yard made of this very hard, dense wood called Ipe (pronounced ee-pay). Randy saw it when he visited three years ago. I gave him some of the leftover pieces and later he sent me this pen that he made from that wood. I have no idea how he crafted it so perfectly to fit the pen components. I would think he had a heck of a time working with it; the wood is so hard that many nails were broken during the deck installation.

clock by Randy

Randy made a clock for me for Christmas one year, a different design than the one he gave my parents. Another example of his fine workmanship...

chessboard by Randy

This is the most recent Christmas gift that Randy made for me. It is pretty hefty and very well crafted. He included a note where he explained that it was made from Peruvian walnut and American cherry wood. I'm including a few close-up shots so you can see the detail. (Click a photo for the full version.) He was quite a talented woodworker. You can definitely see his perfectionist tendencies here.
